History of Crawford and Clark counties, Illinois Pub 1883 Page 255-256 states :"Cornelius Stephenson...was born November 20, 1829 in Butler County, Ohio. He was raised in that county. He was married in that county, July 8, 1855 to Miss Mary Huls daughter of Joseph Huls. In 1857, he removed to Crawford County, Ill...His (subject's) father, BENJAMIN STEPHENSON, was born in New Jersey. Removed with his parents, at age of four years, to Ohio--Butler County--where he remained til his death which occurred in 1873 (June) aged about sixty-seven years. He followed the profession of farming, and became quite wealthy. He owned, at one time, about 400 acres of land. He was married, in Butler County, to Miss THEODOSIA LOWE, by whom he had twelve children, of whom nine survive him...."

Butler County, Ohio land records:
Bk N Pg 103 - In 1826 a land record states Cornelius Stephenson and his wife Phebe sell land to Benjamin Stephenson and then Bk 13 Pg 787 - a second record dated 5 Sep 1846 says Cornelius Stephenson and his wife Phebe sell land to Benjamin S. Stephenson and describes the area of land and says included in the sale is this land except the land sold to Benjamin in the 1826 deed and land for the heirs of John Decker in a 22 Nov 1820 deed.

His father, Cornelius' birth and death dates are calculated based on the following facts: His tombstone states he lived to 75 years (months not stated), he signed a land document with his wife Phebe in Sept 1846, and the age range he is listed within on the 1830 and 1840 census. Putting this information together shows he must have been born about 1770 and died in late 1846 for all the facts to line up.

Also his father Cornelius and his wife Phebe sign a land document in Butler County, Ohio as early as 1812 (Book C Pg 286, 287). His wife Phebe also signs a land document in 1846. William Roberts who is married to Pheobe Jane Stephenson (daughter of Benjamin and Theodosia) is a witness on the document.
