Hers birth year is based upon the 1850 US Census, where she is listed as Dorothy Stephenson, aged 42 years, in the household of Benjamin Stephenson in Union Township, Butler County, Ohio, enumerated on 29 August 1850, and the 1860 US Census, where she is listed as Theodore Stephenson, aged 52 years, in the household of Benj S Stephenson in Union Township, Butler County, Ohio. Her death year is then calculated from that birth year and the age listed on her tombstone of 59 years.

History of Crawford and Clark counties, Illinois Pub 1883 Page 255-256 states :"Cornelius Stephenson...was born November 20, 1829 in Butler County, Ohio. He was raised in that county. He was married in that county, July 8, 1855 to Miss Mary Huls daughter of Joseph Huls. In 1857, he removed to Crawford County, Ill...His (subject's) father, BENJAMIN STEPHENSON, was born in New Jersey. Removed with his parents, at age of four years , to Ohio--Butler County--where he remained til his death which occurred in 1873 (June) aged about sixty-seven years. He married, in Butler County, to Miss THEODOSIA LOWE, by whom he had twelve children, of whom nine survive him...."
