Charles Seigel Conger, the son of Elias Gregory Conger and Margaret Jane Ireland, was bound out by his father at six years of age after his mother's untimely death. Raised and taught agriculture by his master, Joseph Tibbles (memorial #24852588), Charles put this knowledge to good use becoming a prominent farmer and astute breeder of livestock. On 21 Dec 1884 he married Betty Speak and they had six sons; Finis Truman, Roy N, Ira T, Benoni "Ben", Lowell Edward and John Luther.
