Born to Horace John and Agnes Smith Knowlton. He was very proud of his name and heritage, being a grandson of the Prophet Joseph F. Smith and a great-grandson of Hyrum Smith.

He was a feisty and adventurous man, having a love of the outdoors with all its beauty and challenges. He was a registered scout for thirty years, earning his Eagle, District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many leadership positions, one of which was Bishop of the Colonial Hills II Ward. He was known as the "Boat Bishop" because of all the trips he took with youth groups etc to Lake Powell. He served two missions with his wife Kathy; one to the Salt Lake City Liberty Stake and the other to the London South Mission. He also served in the Salt Lake Temple for thirteen years.

At the young age of twenty-one, Joseph received his law degree from the University of Utah and then went to OCS, graduating as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. For three years during the Korean War, he served as a legal officer aboard the USS Essex, progressing to the rank of Lieutenant.

Upon returning to Salt Lake, he had a private law practice and also worked in the Attorney General's Office as Chief Council for the Highway, Parks and Recreation Dept. and also head of the Condemnation Section. Later in his practice, he became CEO of the Big Piney Oil and Gas Co.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Kathleen Cannon; brother, Horace (Buddy); sister, Mary Wootton; sons, John and Clark; and daughters, Jules, Amy, and Leslie. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John; sisters, Sarah and Agnes; and one child, Jennifer.

Services will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in the Cottonwood II Ward Chapel, 2080 East Donelson Lane (5165 South), with a viewing one hour prior.
