Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Mack Newell Baker and the late Emma Rinthy Baker. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Pitts Sunday School Class. He was formerly employed at Fort Roofing and Sheet Metal Works and later retired from Sumter School District 17. He was a member and Past Worshipful Master of the Claremont Masonic Lodge and Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Easter Star. He was an avid fisherman.
