Robert Little was born on June 27, 1865, in St John's, Newfoundland, then a self-governing Dominion of the British Empire. His father, Philip Francis had retired as the first Premier of Newfoundland and was then a Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. His parents had married in Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire), Co Dublin, Ireland. At the time of his birth, his father was 41 and his mother, Mary Jane Holdright, a native of Dublin, was 20. He was the oldest of 13 children: he had nine brothers and three sisters. His parents returned to Ireland after the birth of their second child. Robert was educated at Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit school. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1885 and helped establish the order in Australia. He returned to Ireland for further studies and was ordained at Milltown, Co Dublin in 1900. Fr. Robert returned to Australia in 1901 or 1902 where he remained, moving to Brisbane in 1917. He died there on July 21, 1933, at the age of 68, and is buried in the Jesuit section of Nudgee Cemetery.
