Laura Roberts Turner, 101, of Lovingston, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19, 1999, at the Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville.
Born Oct. 15, 1897, at Adial in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Edward Turner and Cynthia Lee Roberts Turner. Miss Turner was a retired teacher with the Nelson County school system, with more than 45 years of service, and also taught in Amherst and Albemarle county schools for several years. She was a life member of the Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Proud Land Rose Society of Nelson County and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as librarian at the Jefferson Madison Regional Library in Lovingston, and in 1963 organized the Library at the Virginia Highway Research Council of Charlottesville. And served as head librarian from 1963 to 1969.
She was a graduate of the University of Virginia where she received her bachelor of science degree in education, and served during this time in the circulation department of Alderman Library at the university.
She later was employed as a filing clerk with the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C.
In 1977 Miss Turner received the Grateful Appreciation Award from the County of Nelson and in 1980 received the American Biographical Community Leaders Award from the American Biographical Center. In 1983 she received the Award of Excellence from the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
She was a life long member of Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church at Faber, having joined the church at 10 years of age. There she served as church clerk and treasurer for
35 years, and Sunday school teacher most of her adult life.
In 1966, through and with the Virginia Educational Association, she traveled extensively throughout the world,including such countries as England,Holland,Germany, Australia, Italy, France and Switzerland. In 1972 she was privileged to travel to the Holy Land and also to vacation in Athens, Greece.
A funeral service honoring Miss Turner's life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Campbell, the Rev. John Campbell and Dr.Fred Senter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston.
It was Miss Turner's request that memorials take the form of contributions to the Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church, Faber, Va. 22938; the Nelson Memorial Library, Lovingston
Va, 22949; or the Nelson County Rescue Squad, Faber, Va.22938.
