German Opera Singer. A baritone, he was the son of a Weimar, Germany court artist. He achieved great success in various roles in the operas of Richard Wagner. At the age of 25, he joined the ensemble of the Dresden Hofoper where he was named Kammersänger, 'Chamber Singer to the Saxon Grand Duke' in 1884. He performed over 170 roles in his career, most notably the role of 'Herr von Faninal' in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" which he created in 1911. His German singing translation of Wolfgang Mozart's "Don Giovanni" was widely used during his lifetime. Following his retirement from the stage in 1911, he returned to Weimar where he taught singing, and from 1920 until 1922 he served as director of the Dresden Opera. He died at the age of 64.
