Arthur was born on November 30th 1892 to Patrick and Mary Jane McCullagh of Bushmills, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland.
He joined the Navy and served on the S.S. Menapian as a Leading Seaman.
An extract from his Obituary states:
Mr Patrick McCullagh, Bushmills, has received official intimation from the Admiralty that his son, Seaman Arthur McCullagh (3/2165), R.N.V.R., belonging to H.M.S. President III, was washed overboard from the S.S. Menapian and drowned on the afternoon of 10th December.
The sad news has caused keen regret in Bushmills. It is but a short time since the lost naval hero spent short leave at home, where he was welcomed as one who was a credit to his family and native district for sobriety, chivalry and other manly virtues.
Arthur McCullagh was only 24 when he drowned at sea.
His younger brother Private Allan Mills McCullagh, was killed the following year in France.
Arthur's nephew, (son of Allan McCullagh) Able Seaman Allan Lamont died at sea when the H.M.S. Jaguar was hit by torpedos during WW2.
