Union Civil War Veteran. A native of Bristol, England, he emigrated to America circa 1850 with his wife, Martha. The Cromwells settled near Cincinnati, Ohio and Peter became a stone mason by trade. After the Civil War began, he answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted with the 83rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 6, 1862 for three years' service. Cromwell was mustered into Company F as a Private a few weeks later at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio. He served with his regiment in Northern Kentucky to protect Cincinnati when the city was threatened by a Confederate attack in the autumn of 1862. Cromwell then went with his regiment into Tennessee and Mississippi and saw action at the Battles of Chickasaw Bayou and Arkansas Post. He was appointed as Corporal on January 20, 1863. His regiment was then ordered to participate in several assaults under General Grant's command at the Siege of Vicksburg. During an assault on the enemy position, Cromwell was severely wounded when he was struck by a fragment of an exploding shell on May 22, 1863. He was eventually discharged on August 10, 1863 for medical reasons as a result of his wounds. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati and later died there in 1871.
