The publication, PAST AND PRESENT OF VERMILLION COUNTY, ILLINOIS (1903), provides that John was the son of Elizabeth Layton and John McFarland Sr.

By the 1840s he was living in western Indiana and worked as a ferry man. He met and married Rachel Solena Oxford on 21 Apr 1846 in Vermillion County, Indiana. Six children were born into that union: Elijah, Sylvester, Elizabeth, Rachel, Martha and Mary. Following birth of the sixth child in 1856, both Mother and the baby died.

John then moved across the state line into Illinois. He married Henrietta Catlin, widow of Aaron Dalbey, on 8 Mar 1857. Four Dalbey children were added to the McFarland household which was further increased by three children following the marriage.

NOTE: The McFarland Biographic entry contains some questionable data regarding John Sr. and the death of Tecumseh. Moreover, the information regarding Oxford names and marriage date is erroneous.
