He was born in Dunmore, Tryron County, Ireland. At age 17 he emigrated to American by way of Liverpool, England, in a sailing ship. He landed in New York on July 15, 1849 and remained in the state for four years learning the carpenter trade. At 21 he started west, coming as far as Iowa. On December 3, 1858 he marred Delphine Casteline Day of Union, New York. In 1863 he got gold fever and started for Pikes Peak. His family arrived in 1864 and they located in Central City, CO until 1867. They moved to Georgetown, CO and then settled near Longmont, CO in a small township called Pleasant Veiw. He and his wife both contracted the grippe. She presided him in death on Jan. 23, 1911. He was recovering at the time of her death but died one month and sixteen days later of bronchial asthma.
