Obituary of Capt. Arthur E. Richards Jr.
Biloxi, Mississippi ~ Captain Arthur E. Richards Jr., 87, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in Biloxi.

Captain Richards, U.S. Army (retired), was a native and lifelong resident of Biloxi. He was a graduate of Biloxi High School. He was a member of the Mississippi National Guard. He volunteered for Active Duty service at the beginning of WW II, was selected for Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned as Lieutenant of Artillery. He served in combat with the elite 10th Mountain Division in Italy as an artillery forward observer. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star for gallantry in action and the Purple Heart for wounds received on February 25, 1945, in the Battle of Mount Belvedere. Following the war, Captain Richards was assigned to Washington with duty with the Army Security Agency. He was medically retired from the army in 1947. Captain Richards was a member of the 10th Mountain Division Association, the Retired Officers Association, the Disabled Officers Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of Biloxi Elks Lodge No. 606, the Biloxi Dinner Club, and was past President of the Revelers Carnival Organization. He was past President of Biloxi Exchange Club, former Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 212 and a member of the Order of the Purple Heart. He was a lifelong member and former member of the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer in Biloxi.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Teddy Richards of Biloxi; his son and daughter-in-law, Colonel and Mrs. Arthur E. Richards III of Jackson; a sister, Norma Mattina of Biloxi; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi. A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with full military honors.
The family prefers memorials to the Church of The Redeemer, 610 Water Street, Biloxi, MS 39530.
