Sufi Master. 18th Sheikh of the Halviti-Jerrahi Order. Literally born and raised in the order, his birth name was Fahreddin Şevki. Iniatiated at nine, and a sheikh by 13. Young Fahreddin studied Rumi and Hafiz, as well as traditional Arabic calligraphy. Named Head of the order in 1913, he would remain in this post for the rest of his life; although after Ataturk's government closed the Sufi lodges in 1925 this would be in an unofficial capacity. When the government introduced the law requiring adoption of western-style surnames, he took the last name Erenen, but is not generally called by this name. In 1940, he managed to have the Jerrahi lodge preserved as a cultural center. In 1960 he published his major work (in Turkish) and turned over day-to-day activities to Sheikh Muzaffer Efendi (Muzaffer Ozak.) he died on the fifth of the Islamic month of Shaban, the anniversary of the birth of Imam Zainulabbidin. Efendi had requested that soil from the plains of Karbala, where many members of the Prophet Muhammad's family were martyred in the year 680 be placed on his eyes after his death. Much to the amazement of those gathered, the soil caused the late Sheikh's eyes to well with tears for the martyrs of Karbala. After funeral prayers at the Fatih Mosque, he was buried in the courtyard of the lodge where he had spent most of his life.
