John HELM was a blacksmith by trade in his youth in the Littleport,IA area. His family life was marked by divorce, abandonment, adoption, etc.

In 1895, he became romantically involved with a neighbor lady, Isabelle LOVE and later married or lived with her abandoning or expelled by Mary EMERLING – the result was two children born to him in 1895 by the two ladies. No record of a divorce has been found but Mary m2 August HOLTZ.

On 10JUN1945, he underwent an operation at University Hospitals in Iowa City IA for carsinoma of the esophagus & died at 4:15PM on 25JUN1945. He had been living in Oelwein, Fayette County, IA prior to hospitalization.
