A member of the All Golds rugby league team which toured Britain in 1907/8. He played rugby union for the Oriental club in Wellington, and was chosen to play for the North Island in 1907. Albert Baskiville was a member of his club, and as the principal arranger of the All Golds he signed up Lile to join the tour. He ended up playing three Tests on the tour, and played a further three when the NZ rugby league team toured Australia in 1909. The trophy which Taranaki clubs play for each year is called the Lile Shield. He first came to notice when he signed up to fight in the Anglo/Boer War aged 15, and had to be sent home from South Africa when it was realised how young he was.
