Helene A. Schelk-Mattson, age 85, of 1051 Linden St., Cleveland, passed away Wednesday Dec. 13, 2000 at the Willowdale Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein.

The former Helene Koeser was born in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County on June 24, 1915, a daughter of the late Car and Elsie (Rades) Koeser. She attended Manitowoc County Schools.

Walter F. Schelk and Helene Koeser were married on March 18, 1933 at Zion Evangelical Luther Church in Louis Corners. The couple lived in Manitowoc County and Crivitz before settling in Sheboygan County where they worked in the cheesemaking trade for several years. After moving to Plymouth in 1960, Helene was employed at the Lauer's Food Market in Plymouth until retirement.

Walter preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1977.

Clifford A Mattson and Helene Koeser-Schelk were married on April 27, 1985 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill, Wis. The couple lived in St. Nazianz until moving to Merrill. After Clifford's death on Nov 8, 1994, Helene moved to Cleveland.

In her later years, Helene enjoyed making homemade crafts, gifts and embroidery work. She also enjoyed trips to Oneida and other casinos, as well as spending time with her family and friends. A special interest was helping her granddaughter, Amy Kistner, put together a family tree book.

Survivors include seven children, Kenneth (Faye) Schelk of Livingston, Texas, Roy (Julie) Schelk, of Newton, Beatrice Grunewald (special friend Bob Joch) of Kiel, Walter (Verna) Schelk of Sheboygan, Carol Jean (Dennis) Roethel of Kiel and Donald (Dede) Schelk of Plymouth; six step-children, Margie (Leslie Jr) Yanda of Gleason, Mary Krueger, Philip Mattson, Frances (High) Krueger and Perry Mattson, all of Merrill, and Terry Yanda; 21 grandchildren, eight step-grandchidren, 32 great grandchildren; one sister, Alma (Roman) Schueller of Sheboygan Falls; one brother, Arno (Marlene) Koeser of rural Sheboygan Falls sister in-law, Lorraine Schelk of Oconto, Doris (Lester) Freund of Merrill, Mary Jane Mattson of Wausau and brother-in-law; Kenneth (Verdeane) Mattson of Irma, Wis., as well as many other relatives, friends, and special friends, Elmer and Sue Sierachi of Cleveland. Helene was also preceded in death by three infant children, one brother, four sisters and one grandson.

A funeral service will be held for Helen on Saturday Dec. 16, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Bethel United Church of Christ in Ada. The Rev. David Werneke will officiate. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Louis Corners.

Friends may call at the Zimmer Funeral Home, 117 N. Wisconsin Drive, Howards Grove on Friday from 3 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of service.

A memorial fund has been established in the name of Helene A. Mattson.
