Per death certificate, Lewis is the son of Edward S. and Sarah Jane (Bowers) Burgess. He was a blacksmith for 30 years; owned his own shop.
Notes: birth year on stone and in death certificate may be incorrect. He appears in 1870 census - one month old. Mother's name: Mary Jane Bowers Smith Burgess. Married Lucy Caldwell on 19 Mar 1893.

Lewis Burgess, veteran blacksmith of Terhune, in the northwestern part of Hamilton county , died Friday, at the Williams hospital in Lebanon, where he had been a patient for about two weeks. His death was the result of an acute attack of meningitis following a short illness with influenza.
The widow, who had also been a patient at the same hospital, was removed to her home, Saturday. A son, Rush, of Indiana University and another son, Lester, of Indianapolis, are the surviving relatives.
Mr. Burgess would have been sixty-one years old Saturday. He was a member of the Sheridan Red Men and Haymakers loges and was well known there.
