Ronald Berntsen was the son of Nick and Nellie Berntsen of King Cove, Alaska. He moved to Old Harbor on Kodiak Island in the late 1960s, where he married Betty in 1970, they raised five children.
In 2002, at the age of 59, Ronald graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in social services.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gordon and Ted and Donald Berntsen; and sister, Marion Boggard.
