Ernest Richard Meyers, former Antioch mayor and council member, died Sunday night at Delta Memorial Hospital. He was 74. A native of Nebraska, Mr. Meyers moved to Antioch with his family when he was one year old and lived here the rest of his life. He graduated from Antioch’s old Riverview High School.
As a young man, Mr. Meyers worked for Fibreboard and in 1935 established Meyers Department Store, 208 G St., Antioch. He and his wife, the former Mildred Jones whom he married in 1937, operated the store until their retirement in 1961.
Mr. Meyers, a 50-year member of Antioch Lodge 175 A.&F.M. was elected to the Antioch Council in April, 1946 for a four-year term. He was appointed mayor in May 1949 to replace a mayor who resigned, and he served until the following year.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter, one sister, Mrs. Minnie Brown of Sumner, Wash., and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home, Antioch, followed by entombment at Sunset Mausoleum, Berkeley.
Pallbearers will include Belvin Meyers, Douglas, William and James Sullivan, Ham Holliday and Ferris Ross.
The family prefers contributions to Delta Memorial Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
