The 1910 Great Register lists Minnesota as John Rock's place of birth; his age 40. Rock appeared at Tombstone about 1902, having come from Phoenix, where he served five years in that community's police force. Some time in between he was an agent of the Milzer Mining Company in Sonora. He opened a mercantile store (John Rock's Dry Goods) at Tombstone and quickly rose in Cochise County Democratic political circles, serving three successive terms as county supervisor. At the same time he engaged in ranching near Turner. At the time of his death from complication of appendicitis on August 24, 1919, Rock and J.S. Chambers of Tombstone were preparing to fulfill a contract to build the Wilcox Dry Lake Highway. Rock's Dry Goods store was located on the north side of Allen Street, just east of 4th Street in Tombstone, Arizona. A young boy named Percy Bowden (see findagrave entry) used to live in the rear of the store.
