According to several depositions of family members and servicemen in response to his widow's pension application in 1891, Andrew Jackson Carbaugh enlisted in Company D, 3rd regiment of the Indiana Cavalry in 1863 in Dearborn County, Indiana and was discharged in February 1865 in Winchester, Virginia. After the war he returned to Indiana and lived with his brother Issac's family before heading west to Missouri. He was there by 1866 or 1867. He married there in 1871 to Mary Ann Dennis.
According to family members he worked for a railroad company in Missouri and Kansas. They had 5 known children: Abraham (1872-1927), Isaac (1874-1875), Lillian May, (changed name to Mary) (1877-unknown), Elizabeth (1879-1954), and MaryAnn (1880-1882).
His burial location is unknown.
