Member of Legislature in 1837 and 1851-2 from Ogelthorpe Co., Ga. He served in the Indian Wars in 1837. He moved from Ogelthorpe Co. to Coweta Co., Ga. in 1841 and became one of the wealthiest citizens. Served as a Representative in 1856 and a Senator in 1858, he was a Democrat, but received a large number of the Whig Party votes. During the War Between the States his home was opened to the sick and wounded soldiers and he helped to care for the widows and orphans. Frances Bartow Wynne was the only one of the children still living when the book Coweta Co. Chronicles (see page 733-4) was published.

According to the "History of the Echols Family" by Milner Echols 1850, John Wynn (his father) was the son of Obadiah Wynne and Leona or Oney Bolton who were married in Caswell County, North Carolina in 1786. Obadiah was the son of Thomas Wynne and Mary Echols.
