When the Civil War broke out, Stephen House enlisted on 15th of August 1862 and mustered in at Camp Anna, Illinois on September 11th 1862 as a Private in Co. D, 10th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 8th 1863 and mustered out as a Sergeant in January 4th 1864. He returned home and continued his work as a Cabinet Maker.
