COLUMBUS HOWARD HOUSE, age 86 and a veteran of the Civil War, died Monday evening. He was born near Ashley in Washington County on October 16, 1841 and started his life as a school teacher, then farming until 1881. In 1887 he failed in business and moved to Marion where he started clerking. He spent many active years in the stores of J.A. Bainbridge and Campbell Brothers, retiring at the age of 75. While attending McKendree College the Civil War began and he joined up serving with Company D, 110th Illinois Infantry. After the war he was married to Mary Elizabeth Evans at Holden, Missouri and she survives. He is also survived by two children, L.C. Campbell and W.B. House of Marion and two grandchildren, Howard S. House of Lansing, Michigan and Mrs. Aline Van Eckhart of St. Louis. His brothers all preceded him in death. He was a member of the First Methodist. Burial was in New Rose Hill Cemetery.

Taps sounded Monday evening, January 9, 1928 for Columbus Howard House of 504 East Main Street, a veteran of the Civil War and a highly beloved and respected citizen of Marion.
Besides his wife and two children, Mrs. L.C. Campbell and W.B. House of Marion, he is survived by two grand children; Howard S. House of Lansing, Michigan and Mrs. Aline Van Eckhart of St. Louis and a great grand-daughter, Josephine Potts of St. Louis. His brothers and sisters all preceded him in death.
He was born near Ashley in Washington county October 16, 1841 and at the time of his death was 86 years, 2 months and 23 days of age.
He started in life as a school teacher then farmed until 1881, but in 1887 failed in business and moved to Marion where he started clerking and spent a great many active years in the stores of J.A. Bainbridge, Burkhart and Campbell Brothers, retiring at the age of 75. While attending McKendree College the Civil War started and he joined the colors, serving with Company D, 110th Illinois Infantry. After the war he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Evans at Holden, Missouri and she survives. He was a member of the First Methodist church in Marion and funeral services will be held there on Wednesday. The body is now in state at the home of his daughter, L.C. Campbell. Burial will be in New Rose Hill cemetery.
