Birthe Hansen Gurley, 77, died on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Birthe immigrated to the U.S. in 1961 after marrying her husband, John R. (Jack) Gurley in Copenhagen.
Birthe was born and raised during, and in the aftermath of, the Nazi occupation of Denmark. During a year long stay with an aunt living in Southern California, she met her future husband, Jack. The courtship continued after she returned to Copenhagen. In May of 1961, Jack flew to Denmark and they were married in Fredericksberg Kirke in Copenhagen.
Jack and Birthe lived in the Pasadena area for the next 55 years where they raised two children, Alise and John, who both attended school in San Marino.
Birthe leaves her beloved husband of 55 years, John R. (Jack) Gurley, daughter, Alise, son, John, and grandchildren, Tyler, Annika and John (Jack). Private services will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
