"J.T. Ellison, Gila Pioneer Dies After Long Illness"
Interment was in Pinal Cemetery for Jesse Travis Ellison, who died at Gila General Hospital Monday evening. Graveside services were in charge of Miles Mortuary.
Ellison was born Dec. 5, 1878, near Albany, Texas. At the age of 7 in 1885, he came to Arizona with his father, J.W. Ellison. They had shipped 1800 head of cattle from Texas to Bowie. The cattle were driven overland 300 miles to a ranch under the Mogollan Rim near Payson. In 1895 the family moved to the Q Ranch near Young. "Q" is the brand that his father brought from Alabama through Texas to Gila County. He witnessed the bloody Pleasant Valley war.
He was forced to take refuge in a fort from warring Indians several times. On the last outbreak by the Apaches, his party was rescued by a company of U.S. Cavalry from Fort Apache together with men from the surrounding country who had come in to help build the fort and stay until all danger was past. The old fort was built of rocks and earth dug from the frozen ground and hauled in a cow hide from the place of excavation to the building. The doors and windows were built of slabs of pine six inches thick.
As a young man he prospered in the cattle business and figured in the development of Arizona from a wild and lawless territory into a rich and productive state.
He moved to Phoenix in 1916 for several years, but returned to Pleasant alley. Many people enjoyed the meals served by Mr. and Mrs. Ellison at their home and marveled at the portholes and other evidence left from the Pleasant Valley War.
He has been in the Gila General Hospital since February 1956.
