He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, England He was educated at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.) in 1942.
