28, 1864, 1st New York Dragoons, at Tarrytown, N.Y. Mustered in as private, Co. C, September 28, 1864, to serve one year. Wounded April 1865. Mustered out June 6, 1865, at Washington, D.C.

William Avery/ Avary, the first permanent settler of North Shade Township, Gratiot County, who with his wife, located on section 31, in 1847. The following spring his father-in-law, John Sturgis, came with his family and occupied part of the house built by Mr. Avery.
