In the area that he loved the most, the dry farms above the Rexburg Bench (near Rock Spring in Madison County), our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Dwayne “Johnie” Lewis Luthy passed away on July 17, 2017. Born August 25, 1935 to Henry “Hank” Lewis Luthy and Helen Mary Wilcox Luthy, in Archer, Idaho, he was the third child of four. He attended a one-room school in Herbert, Idaho from kindergarten through eighth grade. He graduated from Madison High School, in Rexburg, ID after which he joined the Army and served from 1957 to 1958 in the White Sands New Mexico Missile Testing area. Following his military service, he received an honorable discharge. He held our country in great respect, having a deep love for our flag and for the sacrifice of those who served and died for our country.

After his military service, he met Ellen Marie Romrell and they courted and then married on July 22, 1959 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Their union was blessed with seven children. His great loves were his family, dogs, horses, cows, and being on his beloved hill. Pack trips, camping, and fishing were typical family vacations, and he explored the world from his armchair through books, particularly Louis L’Amour. The riches of the earth were never his ambition; his greatest treasures were his family, friends, and his testimony.

A lifelong member of the LDS church, Johnie served in multiple callings including the Parker Ward Bishopric, the High Priest Group Leadership, the Elder’s Quorum, the Young Men’s organization, the Sunday School, and his favorite, being a nursery leader in the Primary. He also loved his calling as a temple worker serving for many years there. Johnie was well known for being able to fix almost any type of equipment. He spent many years working as a diesel- and farm-equipment mechanic. In his later years, he returned to what he loved and enjoyed most —farming and ranching with the help of the Bronco and his dog. He also spent time working for the City of Sugar City, ID in the Public Works Department. However, no matter how busy he was, he was always willing to help others, a trait that he learned from his mother which he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Johnie was well-known for his sense of humor, his affectionate teasing, his down-home wisdom, and his ability to talk his way around and through sticky situations. He was also known for his work ethic, his honesty and a deep regard for his family name.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen, his children: Jeff (Sally), Susan Fullmer, Tom (Laura), David (Ann), Jared (Eileen), and Jennifer (Irvin) Kreider; as well as his brother Kay (Shirley), and sister Mardean Pope and sister-in-law Norma Harris. He is survived by 30 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Luthy; son, Jeremy; brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Nelia; brothers-in-law, Dennis Pope and Rex Romrell; his son-in-law, Kelly Fullmer, and his great-grandson, Justin Luthy.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 25th at 11:00 AM at the Sugar City Stake Center. The Luthy Family will receive friends Monday, July 24th from 5:30-7:00 PM at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and Tuesday 10:00 to 10:45 AM prior to the funeral services at the Sugar City Stake Center.
