Rocepha was the daughter of Simeon Chapman and Elizabeth Dunkle. The family lived in the Jefferson County, PA area. They moved to the Lawrence County, TN area in 1857. When the Civil War started Simeon returned to PA and enlisted there in 1861. After the Civil War, the family moved to Easton, Faribault County, MN in 1864 and then to the Austin, Mower County, MN area in 1870. Rocepha married Richard Staples on Sep 30, 1876 in MN. She had 4 children with Richard before they divorced. She then married Gustavis Fellows Davies Rice on June 14, 1885 in Austin, Mower County, MN. They had three children. GFD Rice died in 1897. Rocepha then married James Sheriff on June 4, 1918 in Pennington County, SD. James Sheriff was the widower of Rocepha's sister Sarah Ann Chapman.∼information taken from cemetery records
