He was an active member of Sunnyview Freewill Baptist Church. Charles was a veteran of World War II, he was an employee of Old Fort Finishing Company and later became a Water Treatment Plant Operator. He was an outstanding athlete as well as an accomplished outdoor sportsman. He enjoyed trout fishing, grouse and deer hunting. His favorite teams were Duke Basketball and the Cardinals Baseball.
He was the son of the late George Leonard and Bessie Griggs Cordell. He was also predeceased by his two sisters, Betty Cordell and Dorothy Cordell Sutton.
Surviving are his son, Charles Lawing "Chuck" Cordell; daughter, Connie Cordell Lyerly; and five grandchildren. Also surviving are two nephews, Larry Sutton and Freddie Silver; one niece, Sylvia Silver; special relative, Tracie Griggs Hildebran; numerous cousins; and special friends, Donna Deaton, Sue Heller, June Perry, Sharon McGee and Emily Kelly.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at 1:00 PM, followed by a 2:00 PM service at Kirksey Funeral Chapel in Old Fort, NC with Reverends Ben Pope and Keith Webb officiating. Following the service, burial will be held at Cherry Springs Memorial Park in Old Fort, NC, with full military rites.
