Alice Cromer passed away on August 4, 2017.
She was born in Monroe County on July 26, 1925, to Lois and Albe Vaughn. On June 11, 1947, she married Hugh B. Cromer, Sr.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers (Fred, Thomas Butler, Albe Lee, and Maurice), and a sister, Doris V. Grant.
Survivors include her sister, Helen Sue Vaughn Parsons, Jasper, Tennessee; three children: Hugh B. (Karen) Cromer, Jr., Forsyth; Barbara (David) McConnell, Winterville; Walter (Janet) Cromer, Knoxville, Tennessee. Eight grandchildren: Dr. Marcus Cromer, Athens; Kelly (Gerardo) Quezada, San Antonio; Lori (John) Oakes, Forsyth; Annie (Matt) Wilkes, Statham; Meg (Pat) Harmon, Atlanta; Rachel, John, and Emma Cromer, Knoxville. Nine great-grandchildren: Payton and Addison Cromer, Joshua and Sophia Quezada, Landon, Hayes, and Grayson Oakes; Hudson and Maddox Wilkes. A tenth great-grandchild, Alice Lea (Ali) Harmon, is due in September. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
Mrs. Cromer graduated from Tift College with a B.S. in Home Economics and taught school for several years before her first child was born in 1950. She returned to college in 1966, acquiring a M.Ed., and taught eighth and ninth grade math at Mary Persons High School until her retirement.
She was a member of the Monroe County Women’s Club and received the Homemaker of the Year Award. Alice was instrumental in the design and development of the original Monroe County Clubhouse.
Mrs. Cromer was a member of First Baptist Church, Forsyth, for more than 50 years. She served for many years as a Sunday School teacher in the nursery department. She and her husband were among the last teachers of the Sunday evening Training Union Program. They both looked forward to the fellowship of the Merry Hearts Club meetings at the church. She enjoyed baking and her Lemon Cheese Cakes often received the highest bids at the annual dinner supporting the Youth Choir Tour.
She was also a long-time member of Monroe County Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma and enjoyed the Red Hat Society outings.
