12th President of Portugal. He served from August 9, 1951 to August 9, 1958. Prior to becoming president, he finished his Colégio Militar studies in 1911 and then entered the Polytechnic School of Lisbon, before joining a cavalry regiment. From 1933 to 1934, he held the head of the Office of the Governor-General of India and later became Interim Governor-General of Portuguese India serving from September 17, 1936 to July 12, 1938. In 1939, as lieutenant colonel, he commanded the Tancos Air Base. He was commander-in-chief of Aeronautics in 1941 and from 1944 to 1950, he was commander-in-chief of the Portuguese Legion. In 1947 he was promoted to brigadier and in 1949 to general. He was elected by the district of Coimbra , as deputy to the National Assembly, a position he held between 1945 and 1951. He was nominated by the National Union as a candidate for presidential elections in 1951 and won. He is best remembered for his moral integrity and outstanding character. After leaving the presidency, he was made Air Force Marshal.
