Estreya (nee Ergas) Sarfatty immigrated from Monastir, Serbia, Turkish Ottoman Empire (now Bitola, Macedonia) on 18 Oct 1912 with her parents and siblings.
Estreya was briefly married to Albert David Nahmmias, an arranged marriage. Because American law prohibited close family marriage, she was able to get her marriage annulled.
Estreya married Albert Sarfatty, and they had 2 children: Rebecca and Stella.
I only met Estreya once when I was a very small child. She was a recluse at that time and only talked to my grandmother.
But my grandmother told me wonderful stories about her and I have some beautiful pictures of her, which I share here.
My grandmother said her mother's name was Estrella in English, but Estreya in Ladino (Sephardic Jewish language).
