enlisted in Brooklyn for one year.
He enlisted with 60 other men
including his Brother-in-law,
Beverly Barksdale 111.
> May 21,1861,The men arrived in
Richmond, Virginia and they were
designated Company E, 23RD.Regiment
> July 7-11, 1861 Battle of Laurel
Hill.This battle preceded the Battle
of Bull Run, by two weeks.
Casualties: 3 killed in action,2
wounded and 2 taken prisoner.
> July 13, 1861, Carrick's Ford,
General Robert Garnett became the
first Confederate general officer to
die in battle. Captain William Haymes
of The Brooklyn Grays was among the
prisoners.The 23rd Virginia Regiment's
casualties;13 killed, 11 wounded and
50 captured as prisoners.

died from this wound May 21st 1863,and buried in a
private cemetery in the Family plot May 23, 1863.
