Lena was the daughter of C.O. Branch and Margaret Magruder. She married Versal Spalding as his second wife, in about 1890. Versal's first wife was Jennie Hall.

In 1900 Adelena, Versal and their three boys, Versal, Lyman and Branch were living in Roanoke. Versal's mother Mary, widowed and age 83 was living in the household. Federal census indicates that Mary Spalding was the mother of 1 living child.

Versal was born on 15 April 1842 in Plattsburgh, New York. He was the son of Lyman Spalding (1802-1888) and Mary Moore. Versal's paternal grandparents were Versal Spalding (1773-1857) and Lena Benton.

"Early in 1864 Versal was drafted in Plattsburgh, N.Y. but on account of the loss of the index finger of right hand he was exempted from military duty. About a month later he went to Virginia in 1864 in the Quartermaster Dept. 3d Div. 24th Army Corps; after the war he was in the employ of the Adams Express Co. for ten years, and in 1875 became Agent of the Southern Express Co., at Petersburg, Va.; in 1883 he became Route Agent, and in 1891 was made Superintendent, Eastern Division, of the Southern Express Company, with headquarters at Roanoke, Va."
