He first appears in the Muster Roll of Captain Adam Alexander's Company in Anson County, NC on 14 Feb 1756 in a list of "Young Men" suggesting he was 16-21 years old. His father, Samuel Ferguson was listed as a Private in this same company. Alexander's only known sibling was Agnes "Nancy" Ferguson. She was considerably younger than Alexander and was most likely his half sister.
Alexander was married twice. According to a research paper entitled "COL. ROBERT HARRIS of Rocky River, Cabarrus County, North Carolina" and published online by harrisdna.org Alexander had five children by his first wife: Mary, born abt 1760; Nancy (1763-1796). Research by Ed Forguson in 1998 suggests that the other three children may have been sons named Benjamin, Matthew, and Lemuel.
Alexander Ferguson married second to Mary Harris (1747-1805), and they had five children: Samuel, Robert, Alexander Jr., William, and Margaret.
Alexander Ferguson's will was proven in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions on 20 Apr 1801 in Cabarrus, NC.
