Samuel Ferguson, sometimes spelled Forguson, first appears in Anson County, North Carolina in a muster roll dated 14 Feb 1756 as a Private in Captain Adam Alexander's Company. Samuel's son, Alexander, also appears in this same muster roll in a list of "young men".

The name of Samuel's first wife is unknown, but he married about 1738 and had at least one son, Alexander, born about 1738. He also had a daughter named Agnes "Nancy" Ferguson who was born about 1775. She was listed as between the ages of 16 and 25 in the 1800 census. It is not know whether Agnes and Alexander had the same mother; however, they are the only children Samuel listed in his will.

On 22 Jul 1778, Samuel married Martha Campbell in Rowan County, NC. In the marriage bond, his last name is listed as Forgas. In his will dated 16 Oct 1786 in Mecklenburg, NC, Samuel names his wife Mattie and appoints his brother-in-law, Archibald Campbell, as an executor. A sale of Samuel Ferguson's personal property was held on 21 May 1787.
