NEWPORT NEWS - We are most grateful for the life of our mother, grandmother, and wife, Jane Hanger Longacre Saunders who died Friday, October 14, 2016 with her family by her side as she finished her courageous fight from a long battle of a lung disease. Jane was born in Hampton on October 1, 1940 as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Miller Hanger. She attended Hampton High School and graduated with a teaching diploma from Longwood College.

Jane shared her passion of children and teaching as an elementary school teacher in Hampton and then as a pre-school teacher and director for Denbigh Presbyterian Pre-School for 21 years. First Baptist Church Newport News has been Jane and her family's home for many decades. Upon retiring from teaching; Jane worked 20 years as the FBCNN office administration assistant. Church was a huge part of Jane's life where she continued to work and volunteer on many committees, boards and pre-school activities for the church. Jane was also a Deacon for the church. Jane had another passion, which was history. For over 10 years, she was a volunteer interpreter for Colonial Williamsburg.

Jane was blessed by the two "loves" of her life. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 24 years Charles Edgar Longacre and father to her two children, son Chuck Longacre married to Marni, with grand- children Catherine, Caroline, and Suds; and their daughter Cindy Longacre Boucher married to Jeff, with grand-children Rachel, spouse David Wright and Maxx.

In 1992 Jane married Marvin Douglas Saunders. They met in the church choir of FBC and shared the next 24 years of her life. Jane and Doug were able to travel and share many years of family and friends with their common thread being Church and family. Jane is also survived by her loving step-daughter Stacey Saunders West married to Chuck, children Logan, spouse Ashley, Melanie, Ashley Field, spouse Steve and Jason West, and a step-son Chris Saunders. Jane adored all her family and was most proud of her grand-children, attending as many school and sports events possible. Jane is also survived by her brother Alexander "Leck" Hanger and his wife Tracy, and two nieces Missy Garcia and Sheri Melzer, and sister-in-law Jeanette Saunders Lystlund, husband Jim.

Family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday night, Oct. 18, between 6-8pm at First Baptist Church Newport News. A church service will be held Wednesday Oct. 19 at 11am at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service in Peninsula Memorial Park. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
