William A "W A" Smith was born on May 18, 1857 in Versailles, Kentucky, the son of John L Smith and Maria (Anderson) Smith.

He was just a child when he and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended public schools and Montgomery Bell Academy.

He was married to Mary Rose Ringpfiel (1858-1938), the daughter of Charles August Ringpfiel (1828–1902) and Mary "Magdalene" (Volmer) Ringpfiel (1839–1934).

As a young man, he worked for Phillips & Buttorff Manufacturing Company for a number of years, then went into the insurance business. in 1895 he started working for the US Postal Service and was a postman in South Nashville and Northeast Nashville for over 35 years, retiring in 1930. he was a member of the local letter carriers' organization and was also a member of Vine Street Christian Church.

Living at 817 North 5th Street in Nashville, W A was 76 years old and married when he died on March 20, 1934 at Saint Thomas Hospital of a urinary obstruction and prostatic hypertrophy.

Survivors included his wife, daughters Mrs J H Hancock and Mrs J C Villines of Nashville TN and Mrs Frank M Smith of Clarksville TN, sisters Mrs Charles H Seay and Nannie Mai Smith of Saint Louis MO and Mrs J B Brennan of Memphis TN, brother Clarence Smith of Oklahoma and four grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at the Smith home, and burial was on March 22nd in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
