NEWPORT – Harold E. Bemis, 80, passed away unexpectedly June 29, 2009, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1928, in Corinna, the son of George and Irene (Seaney) Bemis. He was educated in Corinna schools and a graduate of Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1946. Shortly after his graduation, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving as an aircraft mechanic with three years of foreign and sea service. Harold married Beulah Bates, March 13, 1954. He was a dairy farmer for 20 years in St. Albans. He then went to work in Newport for Lewis Brothers Inc., as a mechanic, and parts manager for the John Deere dealership working there for more than 24 years, retiring in 1996. While employed at Lewis Brothers, he attended several John Deere technical schools. Harold enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, his gardens and especially, family camping at NASCAR races. Harold liked to dance and as his family said, "he sure could cut a rug." His Friday night poker games were very special to him, along with playing cribbage with his friends, Martin and Donna. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beulah M. Bemis of Newport; two sons, Aaron Bemis and his wife, Rhonda, of Newport and Royce Rollins of Palmyra; two daughters and their husbands, Sherry and Kevin Davis of Plymouth and Serena and Jeffrey Goodall of Greenbush; a brother, Edward Bemis of Palmyra; a sister and her husband, Dot and Blaine Neal of St. Albans; 11 grandchildren, Royce Jr., Jeremy, Eric, Heather, Darci, Amber, Sapphire, Larry, Jeffrey, Brandi and Chad; four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins
