Pleasant Moon Benning was born 3 Oct. 1783 in Buckingham Co. VA. His tombstone error listed birth at 'Rockingham' Co.' located across the Blue Ridge Mts. from the Benning family settlement in Henrico Co. Pleasant's parents were Capt. John Antony Benning / Jean Antoine Benin 1736-1809), Revolutionary War patriot, French & Indian War veteran, & French Huguenot and Sarah 'Sallie' Cobb (1756-Bef 1809). Most likely Pleasant Moon Benning was named for his great-grandmother Susannah Moon Cobb's younger brother, Pleasant Moon (1770-1781), who died young. In 1785 when Pleasant was two, his parents moved to Columbia Co. GA & settled near Sarah's father, Col. Thomas Cobb(s). Pleasant's father John Benning bought 640 acres of land along the Savannah River where he owned a large farm & extensive personal property.

In 1809 as the oldest son, Pleasant Benning unmarried at age 25, became Executor of his father's will & in charge of all his younger siblings. Just two months later Pleasant married Malinda Lewis White age 20 on June 8, 1809, daughter of Captain Richard P. White, Revolutionary War patriot, & Mary Meriwether. The White family followed the Benning family to GA. This marriage of two important VA families is well documented. Pleasant & Mary White Benning had 10 children: 1. John Anthony Benning (1810-c.1812) named for grandfather; 2. Pleasant Melvin Benning (1811 - c.1814;) 3. General Henry Lewis Benning Esq. CSA. (1814 -1875) wife: Mary Howard Jones; 4. Columbus Washington Benning (1816-1817); 5. Richard Edwin Benning, CSA. (1818-1892) wife: Frances Antoinette Simpson; 6. Mary Louise Benning (1820-??); 7. Sarah Amanda Benning (1822-1839); 8. Caroline Malinda Benning Martin (1824-1858) (Mrs. Benjamin Y.); 9. Girl Benning (twin)(1826-1826); 10. Girl Benning (twin)(1826-1826); 11. Augusta Palmyra Benning Patterson (1827-1902) (Mrs. Madison Lewis). Pleasant Benning's name appeared in the 1820 & 1830 US Census for Columbia Co. Ga.

In 1832 Benning bought farmland near Pine Mountain, Harris County, GA made available due to his father John Benning's military service. Pleasant Benning won a land lottery that encouraged settlers to move to west GA. He bought 202 1/2 acres of land for land along the Chattahoochee River for a $18.00 land grant fee where he later settled his family in Harris Co. created in 1827 from parts of Muscogee & Trump Counties. Pleasant's mother-in-law, Mary Meriwether White relocated in 1832 to Harris Co. with his family.

Pleasant Moon Benning was proud of his family connections and included the names of his parents and wife on his tombstone when he died 25 October 1845. He was buried in a small cemetery located on his plantation called the Pleasant
Benning Cemetery. Also buried there with Pleasant were his daughter, Sarah Amanda Benning (1822-1839), and his mother-in-law Mary Meriwether White (1763-1840).
