Richard Edwin Benning, Planter & Confederate veteran, was the son of Pleasant Moon Benning (1783-1845)& Malinda Lewis White Benning (1763-1840). Ed Benning's grandfathers, Capt. John A. Benning (1737-1809) & Capt. Richard P. White (1758-1814) were Revolutionary War Veterans in VA, who later settled on land grants & lotteries in GA. Ed's parents, were second generation settlers in Columbia Co. GA, and Ed was born there 18 Dec 1818. As the plantations became over-planted, his parents left Columbia Co. in 1831 & moved to Harris Co. GA.

Ed Benning married Frances 'Fannie' Antoinette Simpson Benning on 09 Apr 1843 in Harris Co. & they 2 children: Louisa 'Loula' Malinda Benning Harris (1845-1935)(hus. Benjamin Richardson Harris; Pleasant Moon Benning(II)(1847-bef 1858); Richard Edwin Benning, Jr.(1849-1904; Caroline 'Carrie' Anulet Benning Carter (hus. James Hamilton Carter); Henry Lewis Benning (II)(1854-aft1878); Louisa Anna Benning (1856-aft1870); Frances 'Fannie' Antoinette Benning (Apr 1856-aft 1910); Pleasant Edwin Benning(1858-1914)(wif. John Walker Harris).

Ed & Fannie Benning appeared in the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930 Census. Ed became a successful farmer with a 400-acre farm in Harris Co. with much of this land coming from his wife Fannie Simpson's father, Robert Simpson, the son of Archibald Simpson (1750-1828), a Revolutionary War veteran in GA.

Ed Benning at age 43 served valiantly in Anderson's GA Militia, Co. 'G', GA. 9th Regiment, CSA. His older brother was Gen. Henry Lewis Benning, for whom Ft. Benning is named. Like so many Georgians Ed Benning's life changed forever. In the 1860 GA Census (Militia District 486, Harris Co.), prior to the Civil War, Ed Benning's real estate value was $8,000; personal estate $36,000. Ten years later the 1870 GA. Census (Dawdells, Harris Co.), Ed's real estate was $3,450; personal estate $850. In 1870 Ed & Fannie's household included their 8 children & son-in-law Ben Harris, 1 woman & 2 children, and 12 former slaves mostly young children and women.

Ed Benning died 21 June 1892 at age 74 & was buried in the 'Old Simpson-Benning Cemetery. (This name was used to
differentiate it from Ed Benning's father, 'Pleasant's Benning Cemetery,' both in Harris Co.). Buried with Ed were
his wife Fannie, her parents Robert Simpson & Louisa Laprestra Simpson, & several children.

This Simpson-Benning Cemetery in Harris Co. GA was re-discovered in December 2017 by Gary Lee, Find-a-grave volunteer #49437889. Gary attached the photo of Ed Benning's tombstone here. Many thanks to Gary Lee for his dedication to finding and maintaining graves.
