Actor. Specializing in playing winos and other disheveled, unsavory characters, he appeared in hundreds of television shows and films beginning in the late 1940s. He is perhaps best remembered by many for his recurring role as 'Hap' in the 1960s television series "Gunsmoke." He studied at Northwestern University and worked in radio, prior to serving with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After making his movie debut with a minor role in the 1950 picture "The Jackpot," he had memorable performances in the films "Good Morning, Miss Dove" (1955), "The Great Locomotive Chase" (1956), "Joe Butterfly" (1957), "The Mountain Road" (1960), "Two for the Seesaw" (1962), "Panic in the City" (1968), "Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came?" (1970), "Duel" (1971) and "The Stone Killer" (1973). His other notable television credits include "Dragnet," "Playhouse 90," "Studio One," "Peter Gunn," "Ben Casey," "Perry Mason," "Hogan's Heroes," "Mannix," "The Streets of San Francisco," "The Rockford Files," "Barnaby Jones" and "Dallas." He also had a successful career in radio appearing on the shows "Halls of Ivy" and "Suspense." He died from heart and respiratory failure.
