Written by Roll's daughter Olive: "My father married Annie Alice Whibley in 1912. They lost one daughter at birth. I was born in 1915. Father worked long hours at a boot shop owned by a Mr. Picken.

War had already been going on since August 1914, and my father felt it his duty to join the Forces...He was eldest...So, he went for training and saw very little of us from that time until he left for Egypt."

Roland joined the British Expeditionary force in Egypt and was badly wounded Aug 4 1916 during the Battle of Romani at the Suez Canal; he died the following day leaving his young widow and 7 month old daughter in England.
