German Neurologist. He received world acclaim for his work with diagnosing an arthritic spinal deformity called ankylosing spondylitis (also known as Marie-Strumpell disease) and hereditary spastic paraplegia (also known as Strumpell–Lorrain disease). Born Ernst Adolf Gustav Gottfried von Strumpell, he was the son of German philosopher Ludwig Strumpell. He received his medical degree from the University of Leipzig in 1875. In 1883 he became an associate professor at Leipzig, and from 1886 to 1903 was a full professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg in Germany. Afterwards he was a professor at the Universities of Breslau (1903 until 1909), Vienna (1909 until 1910) and Leipzig (1910), where in 1915 he was appointed the senior leader. In 1884 he published a textbook on internal medicine that was based on his experiences, "Lehrbuch der speziellen Pathologie und Therapie der inneren Krankheiten" (Textbook of Special Pathology and Therapy of Internal Diseases) that was then considered to be the definitive textbook in Germany regarding internal medicine. He died at the age of 71.
