Mrs. Julia Backenstross Clarke of 205 E. Yates St., East Syracuse, died yesterday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Churubusco, she resided in East Syracuse 30 years. A member of the Alter and Rosary Society of St. Matthew's Church and a member of Local 319, Electrical Workers Union.

Surviving are her husband, Douglas Clarke; two daughters, Sister M Lucie of St. Paul's Convent, Whitesboro, Mrs Philip Ward of Coopers Cove, Texas; two sons Frederick G. Backenstross and Richard M Backenstross, both of East Syracuse; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Charles Ostrander of Marcellus; two sisters, Mrs Rose Guyette of Montreal, Que., and Mrs Paul Daignault of Manlius; six brothers, Arthur, Victor, Isadore, Leo, Stanley, and George Miller all of Canastota and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Delaney and Greatbell Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. in St. Matthew's Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Friday at the funeral home.
