Richard M. Backenstross, 82, of East Syracuse, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Loretto.

He was born November 30, 1935, in East Syracuse, the son of the late Frederick and Julia Backenstross and was a graduate of East Syracuse-Minoa schools. Richard first served his country as a US Marine and later served with the US Navy, with over 25 years of service.

He is survived by four children, Richard Backenstross of Bridgeport, Kurt (Tracie) Backenstross of Fulton, Dianne (Mark) Harrington of Liverpool and Erik (Tory) Backenstross of Bridgeport; four grandchildren, Colin and Devin Harrington and Quinn and Rowan Backenstross; and two sisters, Shirley (Philip) Ward and Joyce (Dexter) Allen. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene O'Brien Backenstross; and his brother, Frederick Backenstross.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 29 from 10 am - 12 pm at Delaney Greabell Adydan Funeral Home, 241 Kinne Street, East Syracuse. Interment with Navy Honors will follow in Collamer Cemetery.
