Killed By His Landlord
John Walters, Tenant, Shot by Alva Callahan
Bedford, Ind. - September 10 - John Walters, tenant on Alva Callahan's farm near Fayetteville, was shot and killed last Saturday evening by Callahan, who afterward voluntarily surrendered to the sheriff, and was committed to jail. Callahan is thirty four years old, and a well known teacher in Indian Creek Township. Trouble had been brewing between the families for several weeks, Callahan alleging that Walters was burning his fence rails. Saturday evening, accompanied by his little daughter, but taking the precaution to arm himself, Callahan went to Walters' home to repair a cistern, but scarcely had entered the gate, he says, before Walters approached him with a knife. Callahan then fired, killing Walters. His victim was forty years old, and leaves a wife and several children. It is alleged that Walters' son, sixteen years old, during the day intensified the situation by driving up and down in front of Callahan's home, threatening to shoot.
